Photoshop Lesson Plans

TechnoPhotoshop Icon In this project, middle or high school students are introduced to photo editing. They learn to create whimsical and wacky images from photographs. The final product is a digital scrapbook.

Session 1 Digital Photographs

To begin, students learn about digital photography, as well as the history of the camera and its connection to artists. Next, they study the parts of a digital camera and consider its benefits when taking photos. Once familiar with a digital camera, they learn how to use it to take high-quality photographs.

Students are then introduced to the idea of making a digital scrapbook. They study sample scrapbooks to notice their content and layout. Afterwards, students take a collection of photographs that they will use in upcoming sessions to make their own scrapbook.


Session 2 Filtering Fun

In this session, students are introduced to Photoshop photo editing software. To start, they learn about the program environment.They explore the tools and their options, as well as the palettes.

Afterwards, they open a picture and experiment with the filters to change the overall appearance of the image.

Filtered images are then used to create a second page for the digital scrapbook project. Students learn about layers and experiment with Free Transform and Warp modes.

Session 3 Classic Touch Ups

Next, students are introduced to retouching tools that can be used to make an imperfect photo into a perfect one!

Photoshop Lesson Plans - Students learn classic photograph retouching techniques. Students learn common retouching techniques to trim edges, remove red eye, hide blemishes, and recolor the picture.

Then students create another scrapbook page, using these techniques to enhance a photograph they have taken.

Session 4 Recolor the World

In this session, students learn how to recolor a photo of their choice. Although these commands are commonly used to correct poor color quality in a picture, they can also be used to create fabulous artistic effects. Using the transformed photo, students make a third scrapbook page. This time, they learn how to use the Brush Tool to add flair. Students apply and combine all the skills they have learned in previous sessions to create the third page of the digital scrapbook.

Session 5 I Cannot Believe my Eyes

In this assignment, students combine pictures to create an unbelievable scene that looks "real".

Photoshop Lesson Plans - Students combine photos to create a fanciful picture. Students experiment with various techniques to remove parts of a picture by using a variety of tools. Once familiar with each tool, students apply their knowledge to create their own unbelievable scene.

Using the transformed photo, students make a fourth scrapbook page. This time, they learn how to use Custom Shapes to make the page look super.

Session 6 Be Creative

Students now apply their knowledge of Photoshop to create their own unique scrapbook page. They know how to:

  • resize or warp a picture
  • add and format text
  • apply filter effects
  • retouch imperfections
  • enhance the color
  • change the layer style
  • paint with the brush
  • draw shapes
  • remove the background to combine two images
Photoshop Lesson Plans - Students apply their skills to create the final page in the digital scrapbook project.

They will use these skills to create their final scrapbook page.


Session 7 Digital Scrapbook

In this session, students transform their scrapbook pages into a Web Photo Gallery, Contact Sheet, or PDF Presentation. The digital scrapbook can then be shared with family and friends.
