Write a Choose your Own Adventure Story with PowerPoint

TechnoKids Inc. has just released TechnoFuture. In this technology project, middle school students become futurists. Using PowerPoint they produce a science “fact” story about daily life for a teenager living in the future.

UPDATE: TechnoFuture has been a favorite for many years. Unfortunately, it is no longer available. To find other TechnoKids projects for Microsoft PowerPoint or Google Slides view the Project Matrix or visit the TechnoKids website.

TechnoFuture IconThe story they produce is written as a Choose Your Own Adventure. In this style of writing, the reader becomes the main character. On each story page they are given a choice about what will happen next. Will they go to school, meet up with friends, or complete their chores? The choice is up to the reader!

The technology project begins with students researching emerging technology and completing a planning sheet to organize their ideas. Resources are provided to guide students through this step including sample stories, bookmarked articles and online videos. Next, students follow detailed instructions to produce story pages using various slide layouts and objects. Students learn how to use action buttons to connect the pages, as well as how to modify the slide master to control slide advancement.

TechnoFuture is not for beginners. Instead, it is perfect for middle school students in need of a challenge.

How Can you Integrate TechnoFuture into Curriculum?

Language Arts and Technology

TechnoFuture has students develop a story using second person narrative. The activities have strong curriculum ties to language arts learning objectives providing teachers with a wonderful opportunity to incorporate technology into their education program. The creation of the Choose Your Own Adventure story follows the stages of the writing process including planning, writing, editing, and revising text. Digital tools are used to enhance the message.

Science and Technology

TechnoFuture can be just a fun science fiction story. However, what can make this technology project even more meaningful is to incorporate emerging and futuristic technologies to produce a science “fact” story. If you are teaching an environmental studies, alternative energy, or robotics unit, TechnoFuture can extend learning into the computer lab. TechnoFuture includes fantastic links to articles and online videos that will get your students envisioning the future.

Computer Studies Project

Do you want to teach advanced multimedia skills? You can with TechnoFuture. This technology project is best suited to students familiar with the basic features of PowerPoint. The activities build on an existing knowledge base and challenge students to acquire new skills such as how to customize the slide master, set transition settings to control slide advancement, insert and format action buttons, and apply advanced animation techniques.

What Makes TechnoFuture Unique?

I hope you love this technology project as much as we do! It is unique…you don’t own a TechnoKids project like this!

At TechnoKids we have written projects that have students assume the role of entrepreneurs, travel agents, and even anthropologists. However, we have never written a project in which students become futurists! We loved the idea of students researching emerging technology, dreaming about future inventions, and then interweaving those ideas into a story. We know that students are creative and we wanted to provide them an opportunity to express their ideas.

What made the concept of TechnoFuture even more appealing was that it allowed us to do something NEW with PowerPoint. We have used PowerPoint to create traditional slide shows, digital stories, and interactive quizzes. However, this was the first time we have used the software to produce a non-linear Choose Your Own Adventure story.

The idea for writing a Choose Your Own Adventure story was sparked by The Tomorrow Project. Last year, Intel released an anthology of stories. We loved them! In fact, we wrote several blog articles about how teachers could incorporate The Tomorrow Project initiative into curriculum. Our readers liked the ideas, so we went one step further and created an entire technology project that includes a teacher guide, workbook, and resources. Now your students can easily create their own science “fact” story!
