EdmodoCon 2013 Resources
I attended EdmodoCon 2013 the other day. It was excellent!
The feed was seamless and I felt like I was right there sitting in the audience. Attendance for each session was unlimited so I never had to worry about missing something because the room was already full. There was no hassle in driving to get to the venue, I just sat at my computer. Best of all, it was FREE! Thanks Edmodo!
I highly recommend you attend next year. Don’t worry if you missed it. They will be posting videos of each session.
Just in case you don’t have hours to watch the videos, I thought I would save you some time, by sharing some of the great resources and learning I took away from the sessions.
Digital Citizenship Resources
The session Digital Citizenship with Edmodo by Christine Baker offered insights into how to offer a Digital Citizenship day at your school. The information was excellent.
If you are part of Edmodo you can join the group and gain access to a Digital Citizenship Starter Kit. However, if you do not use Edmodo, you can still get your own resources by visiting Common Sense Media. There are posters that are perfect for your classroom or computer lab. The Scope & Sequence tool will connect you to lessons for each grade with accompanying videos. If you sign up to the website, you can also receive handouts for each lesson. One of the resources I really like is the Digital Citizenship Pledge.
The Global Read Aloud
The session The Global Read Aloud – How Edmodo Helped Connect 30,000 Students by Pernille Ripp was so amazing. The Global Read Aloud is a global literacy collaboration project. Teachers and their students sign up and agree to read the same book at the same time. Discussions and activities with other classes about the story are done using Edmodo, twitter, Skype, or other social media. This year’s project runs from September 30th – November 8th. Visit The Global Read Aloud to gain access to the Edmodo Group codes. You can also visit Global Read Aloud Wiki, like the Global Read Aloud Facebook Page, or look for the Twitter hashtag #GRA13.
There was some discussion during Q&A after one of the presentations about whether teachers and students should use their real photo or a cartoon version of themselves when posting a profile picture to Edmodo or another social network (a really interesting topic for a future blog article). For those teachers that prefer avatars here are some sites that came highly recommended from a conference attendee:
- Doppelme – You don’t have to join the site to make and save the avatar (right click on the avatar, and select Save As Picture). You can get access to more features if you sign up, however this will require an email address.
- Otaku Avatar Maker – You can download or link to your avator. Please note, the girl character starts out wearing underwear, which at many schools will not be appropriate.
- Portrait Avatar Maker – This site is almost identical to Otaku Avatar Maker except that the characters are wearing tshirts and shorts to start and their body proportions are more realistic for girls.
Recommended Web Apps
Are you interested in web apps? I kept track of the web apps recommended by presenters and conference attendees throughout the sessions. Here are some of their favorites:

- Thinglink – Add links to images to connect to sound, video, social, or other online content.
- Penzu – Free online diary.
- Tagxedo or Wordle – Produce word clouds.
- Big Huge Labs – Transform photos into magazine covers, badges, and more!
- NoRedInk – Practice grammar and writing skills.
- Live Binders – Organize resources into a virtual binder.
