In this technology project, students become travel agents. They create a travel advertisement for a weekend getaway using Microsoft PowerPoint.

TechnoTravel provides teachers with all the tools they need. When you order TechnoTravel you will receive:

  • teacher guide
  • student workbook
  • detailed lesson plans
  • review questions
  • skill reviews
  • extension activities
  • marking sheet
  • templates
  • sample files
  • parent letter
  • certificate

Research a Travel Destination

To begin, students study a sample travel advertisement to get ideas for their own trip.

Afterwards, students select a destination. Some ideas for selecting a destination include:

  • Pick a Local Destination: Select a destination that is close to home. Students can consider the sites or events that will attract tourists to their own community.
  • Pick a Familiar Destination: Select a destination where students have vacationed in the past. They will already be familiar with many of the fun places to see and things to do.
  • Pick a Destination that is Being Studied: Select a destination that is already being studied. For example, if studying the rainforest, students could research a city in Costa Rica or if studying ancient civilizations, students could research a city in Egypt.
  • Pick a Destination for a Type of Tourist: Select a destination based on the type of tourist. For example, is the weekend getaway for families, couples, or seniors? The type of tourist will change the events and sites selected for the weekend getaway.

Once students have selected a destination they use Windows Internet Explorer to research facts about the location. Detailed instructions explain how to organize information. Students use a checklist to remain focused during the research process.

Create a Unique Design for the Travel Advertisement

Once the research is completed, students start to create the travel advertisement for their weekend getaway. Students learn how to  customize the slide master to create a unique design for their advertisement.

Working with the Slide Master:

  • select a unique background
  • draw and format a shape
  • format text
  • change the bullet style
  • customize header and footer
  • resize and move placeholders
  • include a clip art that acts as the company logo

Create a Travel Itinerary

Next, students create a travel itinerary that outlines the activities, site seeing trips, and events planned for the weekend getaway. Detailed instructions explain how to use a table to organize activities for each day. The table is formatted to look great.

Helpful tips are included with the instructions to encourage students to be thoughtful about the itinerary. For example:
  • What activities will tourists like?
  • How much time is needed to participate in the activity?
  • Will the weather be suitable for the activity?

Create a Slide for each Activity on the Itinerary

Students create slides to describe each event or site that tourists will see on the weekend getaway. Students use Slide View and Outline View to make the slides. Afterwards, they compare the two Views to gain an understanding of their strengths and weaknesses.

A list of descriptive phrases are provided to help students word the slides to sound like an authentic advertisement.
  • experience the thrill
  • explore the wonders
  • uncover the treasure
  • discover the mystery

Let Tourists Learn More about the Travel Destination

Students complete the content of their travel advertisement by making two slides. One slide has a map of the destination on a slide with labels to highlight the city. The other slide contains hyperlinks to websites on the Internet that tourists will find helpful. When these slides are finished, students follow detailed instructions to edit the travel advertisement.

Each assignment ends with a checklist:

Advertise the Weekend Getaway

Finally, students market their weekend getaway to tourists. There are three options for promoting the trip. Students can prepare the presentation to play on a kiosk, print the slides as a brochure, or view the file as a web page. Pick the instructions that are best-suited to your situation!

Customizable Marking Sheet Included

A customizable marking sheet is provided for the teacher. The marking sheet is designed to assess the content of the travel advertisement.
