TECHNOSURVIVOR TECHNOLOGY PROJECT

Computer Camp Lesson Plans

Teacher Guide - Customizable Resource Files

Are you looking for a fun way to teach about computer hardware or binary code?  TechnoSurvivor makes learning about computer parts FUN!

In TechnoSurvivor, students are brought to TechnoIsland where they must outthink, out-decode, and out-assemble their opponents.

Are you the Ultimate Survivor?

In TechnoSurvivor students will be stranded deep in the computer lab on TechnoIsland. They band together with other students to form a tribe. They must use their collective wits to survive on TechnoIsland.

Hour by hour, the harsh elements and threatening tribes in the area will test their endurance. Tribes earn rewards that will help them on TechnoIsland by participating in computer-related contests. The tribe to win the most rewards will earn the title of “TechnoSurvivor.”

The lesson plans are divided into four parts:

  • Survivor Profiles
  • Computer Trivia Contest
  • Binary Code Cracker Contest
  • Computer Rescue Contest

Part 1: Survivor Profiles

While on the island students are assigned to tribes. To get to know fellow tribe members, each survivor creates their own profile using Microsoft Word.

Part 2: Computer Trivia Contest

What tribe will be able to outthink their opponents? On TechnoIsland the native inhabitants are computer parts. In this society each computer part has an important role. Students watch "What's Inside the Box?" to learn about this high-tech culture.

Afterwards, students work together with their tribe members to answer computer-related questions in the Computer Trivia Contest.

Questions in the Computer Trivia contest are categorized according to difficulty level.

The number of points awarded for a correct answer depends on the difficulty level of the question asked. Points are given for each correct answer by awarding a tribe a TechnoSurvivor Card with a particular amount of points.

After all questions in the contest have been asked, tribes add up the points on the TechnoSurvivor Cards to arrive at a total. The tribe with the most points wins the reward.

Part 3: Binary Code Cracker Contest

What tribe will be able to out-decode their opponents? On TechnoIsland the language spoken is binary code. In the Binary Code Contest tribe members translate the native language the quickest to win rewards. The fun begins when students watch a presentation about "Binary Code" to learn about this language.

To play the Binary Code Cracker Contest, students locate items on the Internet. Each item found earns a tribe member a Binary Code Card. Once a camper has three cards they must use the Binary Code Cracker to decode each piece of binary code into a letter on the keyboard. Upon completion of the contest, campers are granted points based on speed.

After all campers are finished the contest, tribes should gather together to combine their TechnoSurvivor Cards. They must add up their combined points to arrive at a total. The tribe with the most total points wins the reward.

Part 4: Computer Rescue Contest

What tribe will be able to out-assemble their opponents? A disaster has happened on TechnoIsland. A hurricane has hit the island and now the computer parts have been blown around. Tribes must take part in a rescue mission. They must find each computer part and hook it up to the proper location to make the machine work again. To start, the teacher demonstrates how to hook up each computer part to the tower.

After the demonstration, each tribe lines up beside a table that holds a monitor and tower. Each tribe member takes turn walking a short distance to another table that holds a keyboard, mouse, speakers or headphones, power plug, and microphone. The tribe member selects a computer part. They must connect the computer part correctly to the tower. When they are finished the next tribe member takes his or her turn.

Computer Rescue

The tribe that assembles the computer the fastest is the winner. However, any tribe that does not show "care" for the computer parts will be disqualified.
