Report on the Giant Panda
The study of endangered species
begins with an editing activity. Students learn basic word
processing skills to improve the appearance of a report on the Giant
Panda, an animal that is at risk of becoming extinct.
Research Facts
Students select an endangered
specie to study. They use Microsoft Word to organize their research.
To start they write headings in Microsoft Word. Below each heading
students record facts about the animal including appearance,
habitat, population, family, food, threats, and interesting facts.
To make the research easier for students, bookmarked websites are
provided.
An emphasis during the research stage is placed upon plagiarism and
the importance of citing the source of information.
Collect Pictures
Next, students learn how to save
pictures from the Internet to use in their report. Emphasis is
placed on respecting copyright laws when using electronic sources.
Write the Report
Before students write their report,
they practice rewording text to put it into their own words by
editing a report about the pallid bat. They learn useful tips,
including how to use electronic sources such as the thesaurus and
dictionary. Once this activity is complete, students apply their
new word processing skills to reword facts to produce their own report.
Format the Report
Students improve the appearance of
their report. By changing the paragraph formatting to columns, the
report begins to take on the look of a newspaper article. Students
then set the alignment of the text, as well as format the font,
style, size, and color, using step-by-step instructions.
Students add the final element to
their report – pictures! With the inclusion of visual media,
students must learn about text wrap. Students explore various layout
options to select the one that is right for their report.
Friends of the Planet
Students edit their report. Once it
is error free, they print their publication. Suggestions are included
in TechnoReporter for sharing the report, including how to post it
to the World Wide Web.
