Are you teaching a
poetry unit? TechnoPoet is full of poetry lessons. Students
follow detailed Microsoft Word instructions to write a rhyming verse, picture poem, or tongue
twister. As they write imaginative poems they also learn
valuable word processing skills. |
The TechnoPoet technology project
consists of six sessions of lesson plans:
- Session 1: Pocketful of Poems
- Session 2: Poems that Rhyme
- Session 3: Picture Poems
- Session 4: Descriptive Poetry
- Session 5: Tongue Twisters
- Session 6: Poetry Reading
Session 1: Pocketful of Poems
In TechnoPoet, students compose
poetry using the Pocketful of Poems template. They learn basic word
processing skills by editing the appearance of text and the page
border on the front cover of the poetry book.
Session 2: Poems that Rhyme
Students read rhyming poems to
learn about text wrap and picture editing options. They then insert
clip art and adjust the wrapping and appearance.

Students then compose their own
rhyming verses by writing two poems about “What Bugs Me” using a
template. These fun poems about snoring, chores, and being late for
school are written by filling in the blanks with a word or phrase
that rhymes with the line above it. Applying their new word
processing skills, students then add clip art and format the picture
properties to illustrate the events in their poems.
Session 3: Picture Poems
Students create a picture poem,
which is a decorative combination of words and pictures. A picture
poem needs to be seen, as well as heard.
Students follow step-by-step
instructions to use clip art to find a picture. Then they discover
how to customize Word Art to shape, bend, and illustrate words. The
descriptive words are then placed around the picture.

Session 4: Descriptive Poetry
Students compose descriptive verse.
Using the Microsoft Word thesaurus, they find synonyms to help them write
vibrant lines of poetry.
Easy to follow instructions guide
students through the process of using the thesaurus to replace words
in a poem about computers. Once familiar with this word processing
skill, they write their own free verse that
describes an object.
Session 5: Tongue Twister
Students write a tongue twister. A
tongue twister is a group of words that are difficult to speak
quickly, because many of the words begin with similar sounds.
Students first discuss tongue twisters that they already know such
as: "Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers." They then write
their own tongue twister about themselves using a template.

The template provides sample
poems
and hints for poetry writing.
Session 6: Edit the Work to
Prepare for a Poetry Reading
Students complete their Pocketful
of Poems poetry collection. The Spelling tool is activated to
proofread the document for misspelled words. Once students are
confident that the poetry is free from errors, they print the
document as a booklet. Students then share their poems with their
classmates in a poetry reading.
