TECHNONASA TECHNOLOGY PROJECT

Microsoft Access Lesson Plans

Teacher Guide - Student Workbook - Resource Files

TechnoNasa Database Lesson Plans Icon Do you need to teach database skills? Use the easy to follow database lesson plans in TechnoNASA to have students organize space mission information using Microsoft Access.

What is a Database?

The TechnoNASA technology project begins with introductory activities about databases. Students investigate:

  • What is a database?

  • What are the benefits to using a database?

  • How have databases changed the workplace?

Afterwards, students use the NASA website to search an "online database" to answer questions about space missions.

Register New Recruits: Add and Filter Records in a Database

Next, students enter an astronaut record into a Microsoft Access database. This is a great opportunity to learn database terminology such as record, field, table, and form.

Students then learn how to filter records to answer questions about the records stored in the database.

Design a Database

Following step-by-step instructions students design a database that will organize NASA space mission information. The Microsoft database will:

  • store astronaut information
  • store mission information
  • search for astronauts by rank
  • search for missions by launching and landing dates
  • search for missions by their name
  • search for missions by their purpose
  • view mission crests
  • print a report of mission information

We have done the work for you! Research can be time consuming. For this reason, we have bookmarked web pages for you about space missions, making it EASY for your students to collect the information they will need to add records into their database.

Build a Database Table

Detailed instructions help students build a table in Datasheet View. They then follow the instructions to edit the data type and properties for each field in Design View.

Create a Database Form

Using the Form Wizard in Microsoft Access, students create a form. By following the database lesson plans, it is simple to customize the appearance of the form.

With TechnoKids Technology Projects instead of preparing database lesson plans for computer class, you can spend your time with students having fun in the computer lab completing meaningful activities.

Generate a Report

Detailed database lesson plans make it easy!  Students then follow the instructions to generate a mission report that organizes the astronauts in the database according to astronaut rank.

They use the report to choose astronauts for a space mission.
