TechnoBiz technology project is for elementary and
middle school students.

In TechnoBiz, students
analyze candy bar sales. They conduct surveys, learn how to
use spreadsheets to organize and graph data and complete the project
by writing a report to summarize their findings and outline their
suggested plans for improving sales.

Microsoft Excel for Beginners
To start, students complete
activities to learn the
basics of Microsoft Excel. A fun classroom game of Excel Bingo
reinforces these new skills.
Real Life Problem Solving
The TechnoBiz project poses a
problem for students to solve: the Yum Yum Candy Factory is losing
sales. It has been established that, although kids like the flavor
of the candy, the colors are not appealing.
The students' first task is to conduct a
survey of their classmates to establish popular colors. Survey
results are entered into a spreadsheet, using a template provided in
the resources. Valuable new tools such as AutoSum are introduced.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Following simple instructions with
pictures, students are guided through the process of converting the
survey numbers into a bar graph. Using formatting tools, they make a
graph that is not only attractive but also communicates its message
clearly.
Write a Summative Report
Throughout the TechnoBiz project,
students apply and review learned technology skills concurrently
with Mathematics curriculum expectations. Skills covered include:
- predict
- guess and check
- analyze survey results
- think critically
- communicate thinking in
written form
- justify conclusions
- make connections between
Mathematics and real world situations
The final report is written in
Microsoft Word. Students are guided through integrating their Excel
graphs with their analysis of how the Yum Yum Candy Factory can
solve the sales problem.
