Introduction to Word

Microsoft Word Lesson Plans for Teachers

Intro to Word Icon Educators learn how to create a newsletter. They are introduced to word processing techniques using Microsoft Office Word software. In addition, connections are made to integrating technology in the classroom.

Learn Word Processing Skills: Creating documents in Microsoft Word requires numerous word processing skills, just to complete the simplest task. In Introduction to Word, the word processing skills are introduced gradually. Study the sample newsletter to view the word processing skills educators will acquire.

Session 1 Microsoft Word Basics

To begin, educators are introduced to the word processing program Microsoft Word. To begin, they consider how word processing software can be used in the practice of teaching. Afterwards, they open Microsoft Word and examine the environment including the parts of the window. Next, educators acquire simple editing techniques by revising a school newsletter that is similar to the one they will learn how to make.

The Introduction to Word project has educators learn how to create a class newsletter. This newsletter will include a title, event descriptions, and a calendar. To start this task, educators add text to the newsletter and then they format characters and paragraphs to lay out the information in an appealing fashion.

This introduction to basic word processing skills explains how to:

  • position the cursor
  • add and select text
  • format font, size, style, and color
  • align text to the left, center, right, or justify
  • create a bulleted or numbered list
  • adjust line spacing
  • copy formatting from one selection to another
  • create a manual line break
  • indent text
  • undo an action

Session 3 Page Appearance

Educators continue to produce their newsletter. Detailed instructions explain how to modify the page appearance. Valuable word processing skills are taught including how to:

  • insert a page using a page break
  • adjust page orientation

The assignments in Introduction to Word explain to educators how to create a calendar for the newsletter. Step by step instructions help teachers insert a table and adjust the height to cause it to fill the page. The column width and row height is set to form calendar boxes.

Next, educators learn how to add text to record the days of the week and calendar dates. A table style is then applied to the table, with the shading and borderlines formatted to produce an eye-catching calendar of events. The events are then added to the appropriate cell. Cells are combined at the beginning or end of the calendar to include a note for parents
