Introduction to Excel

Microsoft Excel Lesson Plans for Teachers

Intro to Excel Icon In this project, educators are introduced to Excel and spreadsheet skills as they create an electronic grade book that stores grades, calculates percentages, displays class average, and graphs data.

Session 1 Microsoft Excel Basics

Assuming no previous knowledge of spreadsheet skills, the first session begins with an introduction to the Excel window and spreadsheet terminology. Basic skills taught include:

  • add text to cells
  • format text
  • fill cells with color
  • add a border
  • align the content of cells
  • resize columns and rows
To apply and practice newly learned skills, a game of Excel Bingo completes the session.

Session 3 Add Formulas to a Grade Book

Formulas automate mathematical operations to save time and ensure accuracy. Using illustrated and detailed instructions, this session shows how to create formulas to calculate:

  • totals
  • grades as percents
  • class average
  • class average as a percent
  • optional advanced formulas to calculate weighted percent and missed assignments

Learning Objectives
  • create an electronic grade book
  • merge and center cell contents
  • select rows, columns, and cells
  • define spreadsheet terminology
  • calculate using formulas
  • format a number
  • use absolute cell references
  • graph data to compare grades
  • copy a worksheet
  • set page options

Session 4 Graph Data in a Grade Book

A graph can be a useful tool to see the relationship between numbers. Looking at a bar graph of class averages in a set of tests or assignments allows a teacher to see areas of strength and areas where extra review and instruction is needed.

In this session, selected data is displayed as a bar graph. Then formatting changes, such as chart layout, style, background, and color are applied to make the graph clear and easy to read.

Session 5 Edit a Worksheet in a Grade Book

The grade book is edited using the Spelling command. Then multiple, empty worksheets that contain the student names and formulas are copied for use in other subject areas. Optional instructions are provided for formatting the worksheets.
