Entrepreneurship Lesson Plans

TechnoVenture Icon High school students develop a viable business plan. They learn advanced word processing skills to prepare a report that summarizes their entrepreneurial idea.

Session 1 Introduction to Microsoft Word

In TechnoVenture, high school students use Microsoft Word to write a viable business plan. In this session, they are introduced to the program window and basic formatting options.

Session 2 The Business Plan

The entrepreneurship lesson plans in TechnoVenture, include worksheets that help students develop a business idea for a specialty store. To get started they select an item to sell at their store such as cakes, skateboards, or dolls. After deciding on what to sell they must then decide what to name the business and the company structure. A list of ideas get the creative juices flowing.

Once students have a business idea they learn how to prepare a business plan that will act as a roadmap to success. Using Microsoft Word a document is created that has formatted styles for the headings, subheadings, and body styles. Following detailed instructions students create a table of contents that updates itself automatically to display each entry and page number.

Session 3 Company Overview

The next section of the business plan includes a brief description of the company and an explanation of the job roles. To begin this task, students assess their strengths and weaknesses using a worksheet. This helps them to decide what jobs they can do and which are best left to someone else.

Afterwards they create an organizational chart in Microsoft Word that summarizes the various divisions of their business’s operations including marketing, production, finance, administration, and human resources.

Session 4 Production Overview

Students write the product overview section of the business plan using the detailed Microsoft Word lesson plans. They produce an illustrated list of items that requires the application of the following word processing skills:

  • draw and format objects
  • insert and format Word Art
  • adjust object order
  • scale, move, rotate an object
  • edit clip art
  • format text wrapping
  • customize bullet style
  • add text to an object

Session 5 Market Analysis

The entrepreneurial lesson plans, explain how to conduct research to learn about the customer. To begin students learn the type of information they must obtain to develop a customer profile. Afterwards, they create an electronic questionnaire in Microsoft Word, enabling them to conduct primary research to learn about the market. When the facts are all collected, students analyze the results to formulate a description of their target market. The entreprenerial lesson plans in TechnoVenture include instructions explaining how to create an electronic questionnaire in Microsoft Word to conduct market research.

The step by step Microsoft Word instructions in TechnoVenture explain how to organize the research findings in a table. This information is essential, as it will allow students to create a marketing plan.

Session 7 Marketing Plan

Next, high school students develop a marketing plan. Worksheets help students to find a market niche, set pricing, distribution method, and store location. Afterwards, they create a table that summarizes the plans for promotions, advertising, and public relations.

Session 8 Start-up Budget

Students formulate a financial plan. They produce an itemized list of start-up costs. Once students are aware of how much money is needed to make their dream a reality they identify possible sources such as family, friends, financial institutions, or government agencies that will either give or loan them money. This part of the business plan is one of the most important, because if students cannot raise enough funds to start their business it will never be a viable idea.

Session 9 Cash Flow Forecast

Students generate a cash flow forecast that estimates sales, predicts cash disbursements, and calculates net sales. This information is organized in a Microsoft Excel worksheet that clearly summarizes this essential information.

Session 10 Road Map to Success

The entrepreneurship lesson plans in TechnoVenture explain how to finalize the business plan. Students include an Executive Summary at the beginning of the proposal. Afterwards the document is prepared for publishing by editing for spelling and grammar errors. As well, the plan is viewed in Print Preview to ensure that it looks great. Afterwards the document is printed and then reviewed thoroughly to determine if the business idea is viable.
