Database Lesson Plans

TechnoPlanner Icon In this project, high school students start a business to plan occasions such as parties, proms, or weddings. MS Access is used to create a database to organize information.

Session 1 About Databases

In this session, students use Microsoft Access to study the TechnoPlanner database. It organizes customer and event information for an event planning company. Students study objects such as a table, form, query, and report to gain an understanding of the purpose and structure of a database.

Session 2 Build Tables

In this session, students begin construction of their database. To start, they complete a planning sheet.

Following step-by-step instructions, students create a Customers table in datasheet view and an Events table in design view. They learn how to set field properties to make data entry consistent. They also set a relationship between the tables. Database Lesson Plan - Session 2 Sample Lesson

Session 3 Create Data Entry Forms

In this session, students produce the Customer and the Event forms. They learn different methods for making the forms including the Form Wizard and Design View. Afterwards, the two forms are combined by adding a subform to a main form. Review questions challenge students to use critical thinking skills to explain the advantages of each method.

Session 4 Enter, Sort, and Filter Data

In this session, fictitious customers and events are added to the database. Students learn how to organize data by sorting it alphabetically, numerically, and chronologically. They also learn how to search for data using various methods.

Session 5 Confirmation of the Event

In this session, students create a calling list. Following detailed instructions, students use the Query Wizard to filter records of customers that have not confirmed their plans. Then they produce a simple report based on the query.
