Traditions Lesson Plans

TechnoCelebrate Icon Explore traditions and celebrations from around the world by studying records in the TechnoCelebrate database. Follow the detailed lesson plans to share a family tradition by adding a record to the database.

Session 1 Celebrations Around the World

The lesson plans in TechnoCelebrate are designed to examine the wide variety of celebrations in world cultures and how they enrich society. This technology project begins with an introduction to celebrations:

  • What is a celebration?
  • What are the different types of celebrations?
  • What makes a celebration special?
Students investigate the TechnoCelebrate database, which is included in the project resources. They learn to navigate through the records as they read and answer questions about the content.

Session 2 Festivities Around the World

Once students are familiar with the database, they learn how to filter the records to find celebrations that meet specific criteria. Students are asked to find information, such as:

  • How many records are memorial celebrations?
  • Which celebrations are on May 5?
  • Name two ways that Christmas is celebrated differently.
As students learn to filter a database, they discover many interesting similarities and differences between world cultures and their own traditions.

Session 3 Finding Festival Facts

The next activity, allows students to investigate a celebration. They choose a record in the database and list interesting facts:

  • event name
  • date
  • reason for celebration
  • description of celebration
  • food
  • music
  • sayings
  • symbols

View a sample painting of a family tradition. Illustrate a family tradition using Microsoft Paint.

Session 5 Our Family Traditions

Students are now ready to add their own record of a family tradition to the Celebrate database. Illustrated instructions in the traditions lesson plans show how to add information to each field, select a type of celebration, and add the painting to the picture field.

Session 6 TechnoCelebration

The TechnoCelebrate Teacher Guide provides a variety of suggestions for sharing the completed database. Students view their peers’ celebrations and complete a worksheet to demonstrate their understanding.

The focus of the traditions lesson plans is on the recognition of similarities and differences of celebrations in a variety of cultures. TechnoCelebrate integrates well into Multiculturalism and Heritage Studies.
