Kindergarten Computer Lessons

TechnoShapes Icon Kindergarten students learn about basic shapes as they explore the fun tools in Kid Pix Deluxe 4 and create unique designs and pictures.

Session 1 Shape Solver

In TechnoShapes, kindergarten students learn about shapes. To start they view an All About Shapes video, provided in the project resources. The video introduces the characteristics of a circle, square, rectangle, triangle, and star.

Next, students use this knowledge to complete a worksheet that includes a tracing activity and riddles. Afterwards, students open Kid Pix Deluxe 4 and use the program to draw shapes. Upon completion, students add their name and print the picture. kindergarten computer lessons

Session 2 Shape Designs

TechnoShapes kindergarten computer lessons include a variety of resources that help teachers instruct the concept of shape. For example, in this session is a collection of artwork that contains colorful shapes arranged to create unique designs.

kindergarten computer lessons As students watch the Shape Art Show, they find and identify the shapes in artwork. This task inspires them to create their own masterpieces on the computer. A list of additional artists that create artwork using shapes are included in the teacher guide.

The new Kid Pix tool introduced in this session is the Fill Bucket. Students create a design with basic shapes and fill them with the fun and fantastic patterns available in the Pattern and Blend Fill options.

Session 3 Dot to Dot Designs

In this session, students discover there are shapes everywhere. Students view the Find the Shapes resource, provided with the project, to find shapes in three colorful scenes. Next, students complete a worksheet to connect dots to form a square, rectangle, triangle, and polygon. Each shape is then transformed into an object such as a window, chocolate bar, pizza, and tree.

The fun continues when a series of random dots in the Kid Pix Deluxe 4 paint zone inspires students to create a geometric design. The dots are connected using the Polygon tool to make a unique connect-the-dots pattern. Upon completion, students challenge themselves to transform the design into an object.

The art element of line is investigated in this session. Students study the pictures in the Lots of Lines resource, to notice how lines are used to draw shapes, make objects, add detail, show emotion, and tell a story. Using a worksheet, students draw straight, thick, thin, curved, wavy, and jagged lines and then use these skills to complete a picture of an ocean, fence, and house.

Afterwards, students move to the computer to draw another picture. They experiment with the Paintbrush in Realistic and Wacky Paint Modes. Once they are familiar with the new paint tools, they create a picture using different line styles.

Session 5 Shape Quilt

A quilt is a great example of the concept of pattern. The Quilts Show, included in the TechnoShapes kindergarten computer lessons, allows students to look for shapes and repetitions of pattern. Afterwards, they use the computer and the Kid Pix Rubber Stamps to design their own patterns. The Teacher Guide offers suggestions for displaying a 'class computer quilt'.

Session 6 Shape Detective

The final session of the kindergarten computer lessons begins with the Shape Detective game, in which students pair up to spy and record a variety of shapes in the classroom.

On the computer, students apply their knowledge of the Rubber Stamps tool to find particular shapes. For example, a student chooses the rectangle, then looks for and stamps pictures that illustrate that shape.
