Kindergarten Computer Activities

TechnoBasics Icon Every kindergarten child can become a computer whiz. The fun activities introduce students to computer rules, hardware, mouse skills, and keyboarding. Students apply their skills to paint using Kid Pix Deluxe 4.

Session 1 Computer Basics

TechnoBasics includes computer activities for kindergarten students. Fun worksheets have children show ways they use the computer, match computer parts to their function, identify mouse buttons, and learn terminology, such as single click, double click, click and hold, and click and drag. TechnoBasics has helpful resources, such as the Computer Parts posters that can be used to create a bulletin board or as letter-sized cards, to help students identify hardware.

Computer Part Posters

Once familiar with computer basics, kindergarten students explore the early learning software, Kid Pix Deluxe 4 to paint a simple picture. Afterwards, they complete a review about computer hardware.


Session 2 Computer Rules

The kindergarten computer activities in TechnoBasics teach beginners about computer rules. Provided with the technology project are posters that illustrate do's and don'ts. These posters can be shown to students digitally or printed to create an attractive bulletin board. TechnoBasics includes a worksheet that has students identify if an action is appropriate behavior. Afterwards, kindergarten students demonstrate good behavior when using the computer to create patterns using Kid Pix Deluxe 4.


Session 3 Computer Shut Down

Kindergarten Computer Activities TechnoBasics includes computer activities for kindergarten students that explain proper start up and shut down procedures. Logon Cards are supplied, to allow teachers to create a card for each kindergarten student that includes their username and password.

The Logon Cards make start up procedures easier for beginners. As well, Windows Shut Down cards are provided to help students remember the steps to turning off the computer.

TechnoBasics also includes computer activities that have kindergarten children practice the mouse skill, "click and drag". They build their fine motor skills, by drawing an animated picture using the Spray Can in moving paint mode.


Session 4 The Keyboard

Kindergarten students are introduced to the keyboard. They complete a worksheet to identify important keys including letters in their name, numbers, spacebar, enter, caps lock, and shift. Afterwards, students open the program, Kid Pix Deluxe 4 and explore the keyboard keys to discover their function. Next, they learn how to use the tool options to make the text look fancy by formatting the font, size, style, and alignment.

Session 5 Input and Output

In the TechnoBasics technology project are computer activities that have kindergarten students classify hardware as input or output. Later, kindergartens use the program Kid Pix Deluxe 4 to paint a musical picture. They input text and 3D shapes and output sound, images, a printed version of the picture. Suggestions are provided for helping students gain an understanding of input and output devices. For example, the Computer Parts resource can be used by having students sort the cards into two piles, one for input, and the other for output.

Session 6 Computer Confusion

The computer activities in TechnoBasics have students practice their keyboarding and mouse skills by creating a picture in Kid Pix Deluxe 4. Upon completion, students will earn a certificate acknowledging them as a Computer Whiz.

TechnoBasics has extension activities that have kindergarten students use Kid Pix Deluxe 4 to draw, paint, and create!
