Computers and Preschoolers

Preschool and kindergarten students use the computer and Kid Pix to learn about the letters of the alphabet. They draw, trace, type, and animate letters to produce artwork using paint, stamps, stickers, and animations.

Session 1 Lots of Letters

In TechnoLetters, kindergarten students and preschoolers have fun with letters. The excitement begins with a song! Students listen to a tune, provided with the project resources, and then sing the alphabet song accompanied by the music.

Next, students view Alphabet Cards. Each card contains a letter, object, and word. Students say the name of the letter and identify the object that begins with the letter. Afterwards, they trace letters in a worksheet.

Students then move to the computer. They open the program Kid Pix and use the painting tools to draw the first letter of their name with various art mediums, textures, and colors.

Session 2 Letter Fun

In the second session, students learn to type and format letters using the computer. To start, they locate keys on the keyboard by coloring a worksheet. Students then use the text tool in Kid Pix to type their name in a text box. They learn how to format the font, size, style, alignment, and color of text to make their name look spectacular. Afterwards, the Read Text feature is used to cause the computer to read their name.

Session 3 The Alphabet Song

Kindergarten students create a new alphabet song. To start, they color letters on a worksheet to locate the letter keys on the keyboard. Next, they use the letter and spacebar keys along with the Text tool to add the alphabet to the Paint Zone.

They then listen as Kid Pix recites the alphabet aloud. A new Alphabet Song has been created!

Session 4 Letters That Move

Dance, jump, and run to letters! The excitement begins when students play the Dancing Alphabet game. They view letter cards, provided with the TechnoLetters resources, that contain actions that begin with the letter. For each letter, they act out the movement.

A is for ask.
B is for blow.
C is for cut.

Afterwards, kindergarten students complete a worksheet to match the first letter in the action word to the movement. Next, students use Kid Pix to add animated letters to the canvas to spell their first name. Sound is applied to the picture, to make it look like the letters are dancing.

Session 5 Letter Pictures

In the next activity, students learn about the sounds that letters make. To start, they view the Letter Picture cards, provided with the TechnoLetters Resources. Each card has a letter of the alphabet transformed into a picture of an item that begins with the letter. For example, "A" looks like an apple, "B" looks like a butterfly, and "C" looks like a cookie.

Afterwards, students complete a worksheet to trace the letter inside the zebra, vase, and snake pictures. Next, students use Kid Pix to draw a letter and then transform it into a picture of something that begins with that letter.

Session 6 The Alphabet Book

Students create a Classroom Alphabet Book. To start they view a sample file, provided with the TechnoLetter resources. Next, they open Kid Pix. Using the Alphabet template, each student creates a page for the book. Each page is decorated using the Stickers and Animations libraries.

The TechnoLetters Teacher Guide provides step-by-step, illustrated instructions about how to create a slide show with all the students' pictures. Alternately, the pictures can be printed and assembled into a unique book that everyone will want to read!
