Community Lesson Plans

TechnoCity Icon Create a multimedia report about the community. Produce a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation using a template designed for beginners. Have fun adding text, pictures, and animated objects.

Session 1 The City Where I Live

Combine community lesson plans with computer skills to teach a project based unit of study rich in learning objectives. TechnoCity allows primary students to use Microsoft PowerPoint. The resources include templates designed for beginners. The templates have a custom toolbar limited to only the tools that students need.

To begin, students open a sample of a completed TechnoCity project. Using a provided worksheet, they reflect on the slide show and answer questions.

Students then start their own project using the TechnoCity template. Illustrated instructions show primary students how to add text, apply a theme, and save their work. They make a title slide and a fact slide.

TechnoCity is an ideal project for primary students who are beginners to PowerPoint.

Session 2 A Street in My City

For the third slide, students make a simple map of a street in their city. They acquire basic map making skills by placing clip art in locations on the map. Students follow instructions to place objects beside, on, in, and under objects to produce a detailed map of the street.

Session 3 The Weather in My City

The fourth slide is a drawing depicting typical weather in the city. Students first learn about weather using activities provided in the community lesson plans. They complete worksheets and then sort the Weather and Activity cards, matching weather with appropriate activities and clothing.

Afterwards, students follow step by step instructions to illustrate the weather in their city on the next slide of the presentation. They practice learned skills by inserting weather-related clip art and motion clips onto a slide. They insert, resize, and position the clip art on the slide in an attractive manner to show a typical day in their city.

  • animate a slide object

Session 4 The Helpers in My City

Students study the people who help make their community special. Worksheets help them to learn about community helpers such as a doctor, nurse, firefighter, police officer, teacher, and hairstylist. Community Lesson Plans - City Helper Cards

Also included with the technology project resources are Community Helper cards which show pictures of different professions and tools. Students name the type of helper and describe what they do in the community.

Community Lesson Plans - City Helper Cards Students are now ready to make the slide about a community helper. They follow detailed instructions to explain the importance of any community helper using clip art, motion clips, and eye-catching text.

Session 5 My City Comes to Life

All students love the next step: animation! Using the custom toolbar provided with TechnoCity template, they learn how to add motion to text and objects on the slide. Animation really makes the slide show come to life!

Session 6 A Report About My City

The finishing touches for the slide show are transitions: effects that happen between slides. Students choose:

  • type of action
  • speed
  • sound
Community Lesson Plans - Integrated lesson plans have students learn about their community as they create a PowerPoint presentation.

Next, they learn to print all the slides of the presentation on one page.

The final step in TechnoCity community lesson plans is a celebration of the slide shows.

Optional Community Lesson Plans

Included with the TechnoCity community lesson plans are challenging enrichment ideas for primary students:

  • Fun Things to Do: List community favourites.
  • In the Park: Follow directions to make a picture.
  • Map the Path to School: Use online map sites.
  • The Job of My Parent: Review PowerPoint skills.
  • Move It: Practice animation techniques.
