Web Design Lesson Plans

TechnoLink Icon Elementary students become web designers. They construct a web page using Microsoft Word that includes links to fun places for kids on the World Wide Web.

Session 1 Web Critic

TechnoLink is for beginners. To start, students are introduced to Internet terminology:

Why do you think the
World Wide Web is called
the "web" for short?

Afterwards, students examine bookmarked websites and rate them using the Web Critic Rating Sheet.


Session 2 Searching Success!

In session 2, students learn various search strategies to help them find information fast on the World Wide Web. They apply this knowledge to locate a range of items.


Session 3 Planning Your Web Page

In session 3, students plan the content of their web page. To begin, they open a sample website in Microsoft Word that has hyperlinks to interesting places on the Internet for kids. Next, students use the Internet to gather resources for their own web page. The content of their web page is organized using the provided Web Page Organizer.


Session 4 Building a Web Page

In session 4, students start to make their web page by following the simple web design lesson plans. They use a template to make a web page that includes an eye-catching title, a description about the site, two topics with hyperlinks to sites on the Internet, and brief descriptions of these sites.

Session 5 Make It Look Great

In this session, students use the web design lesson plans to make their web page look great by adding bullets, dividers, and animations from the Clip Art library. Afterwards, students insert the pictures they saved in Session 3 to their web page. The addition of graphics creates an appealing layout and design that kids are sure to love.


The web design lesson plans include checklists.


Session 6 Upload the Web Page

In this session, students use the web design lesson plans to edit the content and layout of their page. Afterwards, they register with a free web page host, which allows them to upload files using a file manager to the Internet. Once students have uploaded their pages, they view their classmates' work online to provide positive feedback.

  • Create a custom background with a picture
  • Make a picture into a hyperlink
  • Create a class web ring
