Poetry Lesson Plans

TechnoPoet Icon Elementary students learn word processing skills as they write a variety of poems. Their poetry collection includes picture poems, rhymes, tongue twisters, and descriptive poetry.

Session 1 Pocketful of Poems

With TechnoPoet, you can easily teach an integrated unit on poetry in the computer lab. Use the poetry lesson plans and provided templates to transform your students into poets.

The fun begins when students decorate the cover of a poetry booklet using tools on a custom toolbar. Following detailed instructions, students learn how to use MS Word to add a border and format text.
Poetry Lesson Plans - Integrate Language Arts with Technology as students create a fun booklet of original, illustrated poems.

Session 2 Poems that Rhyme

TechnoPoet includes a short exercise that has students examine rhyming words in preparation for composing a rhyming poem. Word processing skills learned in this session include:

  • insert, resize, and move clip art
  • change text wrapping
  • apply a picture style

Poetry Lesson Plans - Rhyming poems are the first activity in the booklet.

To practise these techniques, students complete two poems entitled “What Bugs Me”. These fun poems about snoring, chores, and being late for school are written by filling in the blanks on the template, provided with the project.

Session 3 Picture Poems

Poetry Lesson Plans - Students learn clip art techniques to illustrate a poem.
Picture Poem
A picture poem is told using words and pictures. As students write these poems, they review the formatting and clip art skills learned in the previous activities and are introduced to two new, fun techniques:
  • how to add and design WordArt
  • how to format object order

Session 4 Descriptive Poetry

The poetry lesson plans in TechnoPoet include instructions on writing descriptive poetry. Students learn how to use the thesaurus tool to find synonyms. Students practice substituting words in the poem, such as fast and happy with more descriptive words. Once familiar with the thesaurus, students write their own poem.
