To prepare for writing a newspaper article, students use a provided template, to acquire word processing skills. They edit a story about the Blarney Stone to learn how to format text.

Session 2 Research Landmarks

To learn about landmarks, students reflect on famous examples using an activity sheet. They consider types of landmarks, such as historical, religious, government, and local landmarks. Following this introduction, they choose a topic.

Students use the Internet to research essential facts:

  • location
  • date
  • history
  • construction
  • sources
  • builder
  • size
  • interesting facts
Following detailed instructions, students are shown how to cite the source of information.

Session 3 Gather Pictures

Pictures are an important part of a news article. Students learn how to collect several images and a map from the Internet. They also take a digital photo of themselves. This photo will be superimposed onto a landmark image in Microsoft Paint to place the student correspondent live on the scene!

Session 4 Write an Article

Using a Microsoft Word template provided with the newspaper lesson plans, students change the research into their own words to write an article about the landmark. To make the news story appear authentic, a flag, dateline, byline, headline, and lead are included. Students change the page layout to two columns and use their formatting skills to make the article look great.
