Medieval Times Lesson Plans

TechnoQuest Icon Learn about medieval times on a quest to become a knight. Students search through an Access database to save the kingdom and then create a PowerPoint interactive quiz to prove their worth.

Session 1 Forge a Shield

TechnoQuest medieval times lesson plans begin with an introduction to the middle ages. Playing the role of lowly serfs, students must read and answer questions about social classes. This knowledge will help them as they earn their apprenticeships towards knighthood throughout the following sessions.

To begin the dangerous quest, students must first make a shield for protection. Using a template included in the TechnoQuest resources, students design a coat of arms. When the shield has been completed, the student serfs are granted the status of page.

Medieval times lesson plans explain how to create a shield using Microsoft Word.
  • fill an area with color
  • insert and format clip art
  • format text wrapping
  • add text to a document

Session 2 In the Forest of Mystery

Armed with their shields, the student pages set out on a quest to rescue the king and save the kingdom. Their journey takes them into the Forest of Mystery. There they learn how to use a Microsoft Access database.

The TechnoQuest database is a wonderful collection of fantasy creatures. The medieval times lesson plans show students how to navigate a database and create a new record.

The medieval times lesson plans have students go on a quest to save the kingdom. A database of mystical creatures is one of the challenges they must overcome on their journey.

Session 3 Chivalry, Bravery, Nobility

To demonstrate their chivalry, the knight apprentices offer to help with a problem in the Forest of Mystery. They must use the database to solve riddles. Along the way, they learn how to use Filter by Form to conduct queries. Students narrow down the solution as they are given successive clues. Solving the final problem grants them the status of squire.

Optional Medieval Times Lesson Plans

Included with the medieval times lesson plans in TechnoQuest are skill reviews and extension activities:

  • Medieval Paper Doll: Use a template to color clothes.
  • Knight’s Helmet: Create a customized helmet to wear.
  • Scavenger Hunt: Search the database for creatures.
  • A Knight’s Armor: Use the Internet to name each part.
  • Filtering Fun: Learn advanced database skills.
  • Journey of an Apprentice: Finish the maze.

Session 4 In the Library of Knowledge

The final stage of their quest takes students into the Library of Knowledge, where the king is locked away. They must research medieval times to find the information that will save the king. The “Power of Wisdom” will be the key to knighthood! Students generate an inquiry question about a specific area of interest, for example:

  • What were the duties of a squire?
  • What type of armor was worn in the middle ages?
  • What type of food was eaten at a feast?
  • Why did knights fight in the crusades?
  • How were castles built?

Students use the provided Medieval Facts document, bookmarked Internet sites provided in the TechnoQuest medieval times lesson plans, and any other resources to create a slide in Microsoft PowerPoint with the researched answer to their question.

  • knights
  • weapons
  • tournaments
  • women
  • castles
  • cathedrals
  • clothing
  • feasts
The medieval times lesson plans in TechnnoQuest have elementary students research life in the middle ages using a web-based document created by TechnoKids.

Session 5 Knowledge is Power

The final challenge facing the student apprentices is to make an interactive quiz on the next PowerPoint slide. Illustrated, step by step instructions guide students in making a multiple choice question and three answers with screen tips indicating which choice is correct. They will have great fun watching their peers “take the test” to achieve the Power of Wisdom!

Session 6 The King Returns

The final touch to be added to the quiz is narration. Students use a microphone to record a soundtrack. With the quiz complete, students exchange their work and test their knowledge of medieval times. Successful completion of the Power of Wisdom quizzes qualifies each student squire to attain the status of knight. Consider having a Knighting Ceremony and a Medieval Feast to celebrate. Suggestions are described in the Teacher Guide.
