Graphing Lesson Plans

TechnoSales Icon Students make connections to mathematics in the real world by planning a bake sale. To make the fundraiser a success, they plan the desserts to sell, set financial goals, and calculate numbers of products needed.

Session 1 Introduction to Excel

TechnoSales is a project for beginners. The spreadsheet lesson plans teach students the parts of the Excel window, terminology, and how to complete basic tasks.

Once familiar with Microsoft Excel, students play “You Found My X-Cell”, a game played in partners which reinforces essential spreadsheet skills.

Graphing Lesson Plans - Students plan a bake sale using problem solving skills and MS Excel.

Session 2 What Desserts do Students Prefer?

To select a bake sale product that the majority of customers will want to buy, students survey fellow classmates to learn about their dessert preferences. Then they enter the results into a spreadsheet. Using the detailed graphing lesson plans, students generate a bar graph. Essential graphing concepts are stressed:

  • add a title to the graph
  • label the X and Y axis
  • analyze the graph

Session 3 Are There Differences Between Boys and Girls?

Graphing Lesson Plans - Students learn decision making strategies using this guideline.
View Problem Solving Model
Students follow the graphing lesson plans, in TechnoSales, to make a double bar graph. They examine the graph to determine if there are differences between the dessert preferences of boys and girls. A problem solving model is applied to make a decision about which dessert will be purchased by the majority of customers.

Session 4 What Flavors of Dessert Do Students Like?

Students conduct another survey to learn about flavor preferences. This information is organized into another Microsoft Excel worksheet, but this time the data is transformed into a pie graph. Students analyze the survey results to make decisions about popular and unpopular flavors.

Learning Objectives
  • conduct surveys and analyze the results
  • organize data in cells
  • format data
  • display numbers as currency
  • adjust the decimal point in numbers
  • combine cells using Merge and Center
  • display data in a bar, pie, and line graph
  • sum, multiply, and divide values using formulas
  • write a report to describe plans for a bake sale
  • use mathematics to solve real world problems

Session 5 How Many Dessert Items Do You Need?

To help students set realistic financial goals, past sales data is analyzed. Students organize the amount earned from previous sales into a Microsoft Excel worksheet and transform the data into a line graph.

Students learn how to use formulas in Microsoft Excel to calculate the average amount of money earned from the sales. This information is used to set a financial goal for the current bake sale fundraiser.

Session 6 Bake Sale Report

In the final session, students write a report in Microsoft Word explaining how to make the bake sale a success.

The step by step instructions teach students how to insert the pie and line graphs, created in Excel, into the document. Based on their data, students summarize predictions for making the fundraiser profitable.
Graphing Lesson Plans - Students combine all of their skills in the final project, a Word document containing Excel graphs and summary conclusions.
View Sample Report

The document is edited for spelling and grammar errors. Upon completion, the report is printed.

Optional Graphing Lesson Plans

Included with TechnoSales are lesson plans with challenging enrichment activities:

  • Add Pictures: Create a one-of-a-kind bar graph.
  • Change the Chart: Compare pie, line, and bar graphs.
  • Pie Graphs: Hints and tips on advanced formatting.
  • About the Sale: Reflect on the results of the sale.

Testimonials
