Digital Storytelling Lesson Plans

TechnoDrama Icon Using Windows Movie Maker, elementary students become digital storytellers. Detailed instructions explain how to plan, record, and edit video to put a “new spin” on a nursery rhyme.

Session 1 Introduction to Movie Maker

To gain a basic understanding of digital storytelling, students begin by viewing two videos that are samples of “modern day” nursery rhymes. By answering questions, they analyze the content as well as the production techniques used.

Next, students are introduced to the video editing software Movie Maker. Using video clips supplied in the resources, students follow step by step instructions to learn how to:

  • edit video by deleting frames
  • add video effects
  • apply transitions
  • insert text overlays

Session 2 Introduction to the Camera

Next, it’s time to experiment with a video capture device. Illustrated instructions show students how to adjust camera settings and how to take a variety of shots. This practice session is great preparation for the actual filming in the upcoming sessions. The lessons in TechnoDrama explain how to use simple recording devices to capture video.

Session 3 Plan and Organize Ideas

Working in cooperative teams, students are guided through the planning process of putting a “new spin” on a nursery rhyme. Ideas for transforming the rhyme are provided in the digital story lesson plans. As well, the TechnoDrama project also includes a letter that can be sent home requesting support from parents.

A storyboard is provided to help students consider all aspects of the digital storytelling video:

Digital Storytelling and the Writing Process

Digital storytelling has similar stages to the writing process:

  • plan and organize ideas
  • write a script
  • film action sequences
  • edit video footage
  • preview story and make necessary revisions

Why Nursery Rhymes for Digital Storytelling?

Often students have BIG IDEAS, which can be difficult to produce due to limits in time and resources. Modernizing nursery rhymes offers a fun and simple way to introduce digital storytelling. This is because nursery rhymes are a literary form that is familiar and they have a structure that can easily be divided into “shots”.

Optional Digital Storytelling Lesson Plans

TechnoDrama includes skill reviews and extension activities:

  • One Picture Tells a Story: Digital story from a picture.
  • About Nursery Rhymes: Question the ‘plot’.
  • Modernize Nursery Rhymes: Fill in the blanks for fun.
  • Happy Ending: Rewrite traditional nursery rhymes.
  • Set Design: Explore easy ideas to design backdrops.

Basic Video Equipment
No high-tech devices are required. If your school has a video camera, digital camera for photos, or just a web cam, you can complete the activities.
