Word Processing Lesson Plans - Teen Magazine

TechnoEzine Icon Middle school students use word processing lesson plans to publish a teen magazine in Microsoft Word. The ezine includes an interactive front cover, movie review, music article, and trend report.

Session 1 Ezine

The TechnoEzine technology project begins with students studying a sample magazine, provided in the project resources. Students answer questions to consider the benefits and disadvantages of a digital publication.

Next, students explore selected online teen magazines, or ezines, and use a rating scale to judge the content, layout, and design.

Word Processing Lesson Plans - Students create an interactive magazine with pictures, articles, and hyperlinks.

Students are now ready to complete a planning sheet for their own magazine. They are guided through the process of making decisions about the content of their own ezine.

Session 2 At the Movies

This activity introduces the Microsoft Word window. Students investigate toolbars and their functions. They use a template, included in the project resources, to explore word processing skills by editing a movie review:

  • format font, size, style, color
  • highlight and align text
  • number and bullet lists
  • indent text
  • change line spacing
  • cut and paste text

Session 3 About Drawing

Next, students learn how to make a layout interesting by using graphics such as shapes, WordArt, and clip art. Illustrated, step by step instructions show students how to draw and format these objects. Students are then encouraged to ‘click around’ to explore the many creative and original effects that can be applied.

Review Questions and Skill Reviews are optional activities at the end of sessions which teachers may choose to include for students to review and apply their new skills.

In this session, students practice their word processing skills to make a poster advertisement.
Word Lesson Plans - Skill Reviews allow students to review and apply newly learned skills.

Session 4 Music Mania

Word Processing Lesson - Students write an article about a musician of their choice. Next, students write an article about a favorite musician. To prepare, they research using the Internet. They learn how to save pictures for use in their magazine. Then they collect information, guided by a series of questions.

Microsoft Word lesson plans, explain to how to write and format the article. Middle school students apply their word processing skills learned in the previous two sessions to complete the task.
