Web Design Lesson Plans

TechnoWeb Icon Middle school students become webmasters. They use the web design lesson plans to create a web page in Microsoft Publisher that includes text, pictures, and hyperlinks arranged attractively.

Session 1 Webmasters

The web design lesson plans in TechnoWeb, instruct beginners in how to make a web page on any curriculum topic or area of interest. To start, students learn how to use Microsoft Publisher by creating a business card to advertise their web design company. The card includes company name, contact information, and logo.


Session 2 Make a Proposal

To gain an understanding of the project, students critically view a website, provided in the resources. A rating scale and question sheet guide students through the critical thinking process.

The web design lesson plans in TechnoWeb include instructions to create a proposal using Microsoft Publisher. Next, students complete a planning sheet to help brainstorm topics ideas. Once a topic has been selected, they organize their ideas for a website in the form of a proposal. The proposal will contain topic name, purpose of website, and a list of the proposed content. Detailed Microsoft Publisher instructions explain to students how to combine WordArt, text boxes, and clip art to outline their ideas.

Session 3 Surfing the Net

To prepare for building a web page, students research information and gather resources. They learn how to refine their Internet searching skills by applying a range of strategies to find information fast. When students are familiar with searching the Net, they complete a planner for their web page. This organizer will be used to guide the students as they make their web pages.

Session 4 Building a Web Page

With the planning and organizing finished, students start web page construction using Microsoft Publisher. Throughout the lesson plans are suggestions for creating a well-designed web page. Step by step instructions explain how to:

Upon completion, students preview the website to evaluate the appearance. Tips are provided to encourage students to critically evaluate the content and layout of their web page.

Session 5 Web Design Phase Two

The focus in phase two of web page construction is on making the website look great. The lesson plans explain how to add animated clip art and saved pictures from the Internet to create a pleasing layout. Upon completion, students evaluate their website to ensure it is ready for posting to the World Wide Web. A checklist is provided for both the student designer and a peer to complete.


Session 6 Upload the Web Page

Detailed directions are given in the web design lesson plans for uploading the student sites to a free web hosting service. Troubleshooting tips and hints are provided.


TechnoWeb Assessment Tools

TechnoWeb provides students with a rating scale to assess their own and their peers' completed projects. This gives them the opportunity for reflection and self evaluation.

Also provided with the technology project, is a comprehensive rubric for the teacher to assess each student's web page.
