Travel and Tourism Lesson Plans

TechnoTravel Icon Middle school students become travel agents. They research a destination and then use the information to create a travel advertisement for a weekend getaway using Microsoft PowerPoint.

Session 1 Select a Travel Destination

To begin, students select a destination. Some ideas for selecting a destination include:

  • Local Community: Attract tourists to your community by promoting local events and sites.
  • Familiar Vacation Spot: Select a favorite family vacation students have taken.
  • Location based on Curriculum Unit: Pick a location that is part of a curriculum unit.
  • Destination for a Type of Tourist: Plan a weekend getaway for families, couples, or seniors.

Once students have selected a destination, they use Windows Internet Explorer to research facts about the location. The travel lesson plan contains step by step instructions explaining how to organize information. Students use a checklist to remain focused during the research process.

Session 2 Travel Advertisement

Once the research is complete, students start to create the travel advertisement for their weekend getaway.

Detailed PowerPoint lesson plans explain how to create a master slide for use in a travel advertisement promoting a weekend getaway. Students use the detailed PowerPoint lesson plans, to learn how to customize the slide master to create a unique design for their advertisement. Working with the Slide Master, students learn to:

  • select a unique background
  • draw and format a shape
  • format text
  • change the bullet style
  • customize header and footer
  • resize and move placeholders
  • include a clip art that acts as the company logo

Session 3 Travel Itinerary

Next, students create a travel itinerary that outlines the activities, site seeing trips, and events planned for the weekend getaway. Detailed instructions explain how to use a table to organize activities for each day. The table is formatted to look great.

Helpful tips are included with the instructions to encourage students to be thoughtful about the itinerary. For example:

  • What activities will tourists like?
  • How much time is needed to participate in the activity?
  • Will the weather be suitable for the activity?

Session 4 Places to Visit

Slides are created to describe each event or site that tourists will see on the weekend getaway. A list of descriptive phrases is provided to help students word the slides to sound like an authentic advertisement:

  • experience the thrill
  • explore the wonders
  • uncover the treasure
  • discover the mystery
TechnoTravel travel and tourism lesson plans have students create an advertisement that describes sites and events. The instructions explain how to arrange facts onto PowerPoint slides.

Session 5 Points of Interest

The travel and tourism lesson plans help students to create an advertisement that can be printed as a handout, viewed as a slide show, or posted to the Internet as a web page. Students complete the content of their travel advertisement by making two final slides. One slide has a map of the destination on a slide with labels to highlight the city. The other slide contains hyperlinks to websites on the Internet that tourists will find helpful. When these slides are finished, detailed instructions in the travel lesson plan guide students in editing the travel advertisement. Each assignment ends with a student checklist.

Session 6 Attract Tourists

Finally, students market their weekend getaway to tourists. The travel lesson plan suggests three options for promoting the trip. Students can prepare the presentation to play on a kiosk, print the slides as a brochure, or view the file as a web page. Pick the instructions that are suited to your situation!
