Media Literacy Lesson Plans

TechnoCommercial Icon Have your middle school students analyze marketing techniques used by advertisers and then follow Windows Movie Maker lesson plans to produce a commercial using basic video equipment.

Session 1 A Look at Commercials

Follow the detailed lesson plans to promote media literacy in your students. To start, your students complete assignments that have them reflect upon their exposure to media and advertising.

Next, students analyze sample commercials. Using advertisements, provided with the project, they examine:

  • target audience
  • selling techniques
  • hidden messages
  • stereotypes
View a sample commercial to notice the stereotypes. The media literacy lesson plans in TechnoCommercial include questions to have students reflect upon gender and racial stereotypes in advertisements. spot the stereotypes

Session 2 A Look at Movie Maker

Once students are familiar with techniques used by advertisers, they prepare for the creation of their own ad. The media literacy lesson plans in TechnoCommercial include illustrated, step by step instructions to show students how to use the video editing software Windows Movie Maker.

The media literacy lesson plans in TechnoCommercial show students how to create commercials using Windows Movie Maker.
Storyboard in Windows Movie Maker

Students import raw footage of a commercial, provided in the resource files, and edit the content by deleting clips, applying video effects, adding transitions, inserting text overlays, and importing music. The goal is to discover the capabilities of the program while practising techniques that will be used in producing an original commercial in the upcoming sessions.

Session 3 A Look at the Camera

The lesson plans include instructions about how to operate camera equipment. To start, students study a commercial to notice the types of shots, angles, and camera movement. Once familiar with how a camera can be used to communicate information to an audience, they learn how to record quality video.

Basic Video Equipment
No high-tech devices are required. If your school has a video camera, digital camera for photos, or just a web cam, you can complete the activities.

View a sample storyboard that illustrates the shots for the sample commercial, Sodalicious.

When the storyboard is finished, students film the production. Provided in the lesson plans are helpful teaching strategies.
