Excel Lesson Plans for Middle School Students

TechnoEntrepreneur Icon Students make connections to mathematics in the real world by becoming restaurateurs. They use Excel and Word to develop a restaurant concept, raise investment funds, design a floor plan, and report financial data.

Session 1 Business Survey

The Excel lesson plans, in the project TechnoEntrepreneur, begin with students learning about the spreadsheet environment. Afterwards, students survey their peers about food preferences. The survey results help to make a calculated decision about which type of cuisine will be served at the restaurant. Excel Lesson Plans: Students plan a restaurant using Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word.

Next, students use a provided template to enter the survey results into a spreadsheet. Following step by step instructions, they transform the results into a pie graph.

Session 2 Professional Letter

To open their restaurant, students need money. Using a template provided with the Excel lesson plans, they learn how to write a professional letter to request start up capital for their business venture. They include graphed survey results to illustrate why their idea will be a success.

Session 3 Drawing Tools

Students receive news that investors have approved their proposed restaurant plans, subject to a floor plan design. In preparation, students are introduced to the drawing tools in Microsoft Word.

Session 4 Design a Floor Plan

Following illustrated instructions, students create a floor plan of their restaurant in Microsoft Word. The plan must include:

  • reception area
  • dining room
  • kitchen
  • bathrooms
Excel Lesson Plans: Students design a floor plan for the restaurant they are designing.
