TechnoMission

Access Lesson Plans

TechnoMission Icon Integrate database skills into curriculum. Follow the detailed instructions in TechnoMission to have your students learn how to construct a simple database using Microsoft Access.

Session 1 Space Exploration

To begin, students study the Space Exploration database provided with this project. By filtering records, students are able to read about the space program from its early beginnings in the 1960's to today while building an understanding of databases.

Access lesson Plans - Students learn how to plan, organize, and construct a database using Microsoft Access.

Session 2 Join TechnoNASA

Next, students become astronauts. Using Microsoft Paint, students edit a photograph to place a photograph of their head into a spacesuit template. Upon completion, students join the prestigious team at TechnoNASA. The edited photograph, as well as other personal information, is entered into the Space Exploration database to learn data entry techniques.

Session 3 Cyberspace Mission

Students blast into cyberspace on the spacecraft Internet Explorer. Their mission is to collect items from the World Wide Web and store the information in a Microsoft Access database.

To prepare for this mission, students complete a planning sheet provided with the project. They are guided in choosing a topic and determining the fields of information.

An organizer is used to record information as students gather their data from the Internet.

The database can be on any topic. The teacher may wish to choose a curriculum theme or allow the students to brainstorm their own ideas:

  • Planets - classify planets by type (gas giant, terrestrial)
  • Food - classify food by group (meat, dairy, bread)
  • Family - classify people by role (parent, sibling, cousin)
  • Animals - classify by class (reptile, mammal, bird, insect)
  • Artwork - classify by style (impressionism, realism)
  • Books - classify by genre (science fiction, horror, mystery)

INTERMEDIATE CATEGORY

Learning Objectives
  • recognize the importance of space exploration
  • filter records in a database to learn about space
  • place student head into a spacesuit using MS Paint
  • use search engines to research Internet information
  • describe the purpose of a database
  • organize ideas for a database on a specific topic
  • create a table in a database to store data
  • create a form and a report from a table
  • apply a preset style using AutoFormat
  • select controls on a form and a report

Session 4 Build a Table

To begin constructing the database, students create a table that includes fields. The properties on each field are adjusted to make data entry consistent. A marking sheet is provided to assess the table design.

Session 5 Design a Form

Students create a simple data entry form. The layout of the form is customized to improve the design. Afterwards, data for each object is entered into the database using the form. A marking sheet is provided to assess the form.

Session 6 Generate a Report

In the final session, students follow detailed instructions to generate a simple report. The records are grouped by category to create an organized summary of the data. A marking sheet is provided to assess the report.

Optional Access Lesson Plans

TechnoMission includes challenging enrichment activities:

  • About Space Missions: Practice filtering records.
  • Sort and Find Records: Learn advanced skills.
  • Blast Off! Review photo editing skills.
  • Make a Mission Patch: Design your own patch.
