Stock Market Lesson Plans for Kids
TechnoTrader Icon Play the stock market in the TechnoTrader simulation. Students make trading decisions. Should they purchase stock in the sports team TechnoTigers or the restaurant Pizza Planet?

Part 1 Introduction to Excel

TechnoTrader is a stock market for kids! Use these lesson plans and all the resources provided to run a stock market model designed for children aged 7 to 12.

The fun begins with EXCELlent color! Students are introduced to spreadsheets by following instructions to fill cells with color. Who will be able to guess the picture before you are finished calling the cell references? Stock Market for Kids: Practice spreadsheet skills and terminology using a picture game.

Part 2 About the Stock Market

Once students are familiar with Microsoft Excel, they are introduced to the stock market for kids! Provided with the project is a simple description of buying and selling stocks.

Working in teams, students choose the stocks they would like to buy from a selection of six fictional companies:

  • Pizza Planet
  • Kids Bank
  • Kids on Wheels
  • TechnoTigers
  • Children's Television Network
  • Toy Box
Company Profiles and Technodollars are one of many resources provided as part of this technology project.

When they have made their purchases, students record the information on a spreadsheet template, provided with the TechnoTrader stock market for kids resources.

Part 3 Buy and Sell
To learn how current events affect stock values, students read the Daily Trader, included in the resources. In each of the four issues, they read news about the six companies.

If the story is good news for the company, the stock price rises. If there is bad news, the stock price falls. For example, when Pizza Planet is the source of food poisoning, the stock value falls. When new toppings are added to the menu, the stock value rises. 		Stock Market for Kids resource: The Daily Trader has 4 issues which gives students valuable information to use when making investment decisions.

View Daily Trader Newsletter

After reading issues of the Daily Trader to make informed decisions about their trades, investment groups complete two more trading sessions. Each time, stock holdings are updated in the Investment Portfolio template. Students learn to calculate the total portfolio value and find out whether their initial investment is growing or decreasing.

Part 4 Best Investment Group
After two more trading sessions in the stock market for kids, investment groups print their worksheets. A certificate is presented to the group that earned the most money. Stock Market for Kids Certificate: awarded to investment group.
