Pirate Lesson Plans

TechnoPirate Icon Have some swashbucklin' fun! Follow the detailed lesson plans, to have your students make a pirate costume, hunt for treasure on the Internet, create a treasure map, and decorate a treasure chest.

Part 1 Pirate Costume

The first step in becoming a pirate is to look like one. Students begin by decorating a hat and eye patch template, provided in the TechnoPirate Resources. They learn how to use fill effects, clip art, and WordArt.

Students choose from five templates:

  • Captain
  • Quartermaster
  • Sailing Master
  • Boatswain
  • Deckhand

Afterwards students review and practice their skills to create a parrot that sits on the shoulder or monitor.

Part 2 Internet Treasure Hunt

Next, the students team up to form pirate crews and set sail on an Internet Treasure Hunt. They are guided by clues, which are earned each time they find a hidden item.

Pirate Lesson Plans - Pirate Map

In preparation for this activity, students learn how to:

  • search the Internet
  • copy a selection
  • paste a selection
  • toggle between windows

How to Play: Pirate teams all begin at Home Port, on the Treasure Map, which is provided in the TechnoPirate Resources. They receive the first of seven clues from the teacher.

Pirate crews are challenged to find an item on the Internet. They find, copy, and paste the item into the treasure chest document. The clue and treasure chest are shown to the teacher. If the item is correct, the crew is given the next clue.

How to Win: The first crew to reach Treasure Island is the winner. A number of different scenarios for winners and prizes are suggested in the Teacher Guide.
