Introduction to Computers Lesson Plans

TechnoSurvivor Icon Use the lesson plans in TechnoSurvivor to teach an introduction to computers in a fun way. Students form teams and compete in challenges to out-think, out-decode, and out-assemble opponents.

Part 1 Survivor Profiles

TechnoSurvivor is a technology project containing lesson plans and all the resources needed to teach an introduction to computers. The activities include cooperative learning.

In the first session, students arrive on TechnoIsland and are assigned to tribes. To get to know fellow tribe members, each survivor creates their own profile card using Microsoft Word.

Use the lesson plans and provided template to have each student create a card with their name, picture, and tribe name. Post the card to make it easy to identify each student.

Using a template provided in the TechnoSurvivor resources, students follow step by step instructions to:

  • add and format text
  • insert a digital photograph
  • apply a style to the picture
  • transform the shape of the picture
  • select a border
  • choose an effect
  • add and format WordArt

Part 2 Computer Trivia Challenge

Which tribe will be able to out-think their opponents?
In the first challenge, tribes compete to out-think their opponents by correctly answering computer trivia questions.

About the Computer Trivia Challenge

Motherboard: The video describes the function of each computer part in a way that is easy to understand. On TechnoIsland, the native inhabitants are computer parts. In this society, each computer part has an important role. Students watch the video "What's Inside the Box?", provided with the resources, to learn about this high-tech culture. A script of the video is included in the Teacher Guide.

Afterwards, students work together with their tribe members to answer computer-related questions in the Computer Trivia Challenge. Questions are categorized according to difficulty level to accommodate a variety of age levels.

The number of points awarded for a correct answer depends on the difficulty level of the question asked. Points are given for each correct answer by awarding the tribe a TechnoSurvivor Card of one, two, or three points. After all questions have been asked, tribes add up the points on the TechnoSurvivor Cards. The tribe with the most points wins. Provided with the technology project, TechnoSurvivor, is a set of TechnoSurvior Cards that contain points.

Sample Questions
What is the name of the computer chip used to store the BIOS?
What does RAM stand for?
What device uses a laser beam to read data?

Part 3 Binary Code Cracker Challenge

Which tribe will be able to out-decode their opponents?
On TechnoIsland, the language spoken is binary code. Tribe members translate the native language to win rewards.

A video about binary code is included with the technology project resources. To prepare for the challenge, students watch a presentation about "Binary Code", provided with the resources, to learn about this language.

About Binary Code Cracker Challenge

To play the Binary Code Cracker Challenge, students locate items on the Internet. Each item found earns a tribe member a Binary Code Card.

When a survivor has earned three cards, he or she must use the Binary Code Cracker to decode each piece of binary code into a letter.

Each student is awarded a TechnoSurvivor card based upon the speed of completing the challenge. After all survivors have finished, tribes add up their combined points on the TechnoSurvivor Cards. The tribe with the highest total wins.

Part 4 Computer Rescue Challenge

Which tribe will be able to out-assemble their opponents?
A disaster has struck TechnoIsland! A hurricane has hit the island and now the computer parts have been blown apart. Tribes must take part in a rescue mission to find each computer part and hook it up correctly.

About the Computer Rescue Challenge

After a teacher demonstration, each tribe lines up beside a table holding a monitor and tower. Each tribe member takes a turn walking to another table that holds a keyboard, mouse, speakers or headphones, power plug, and microphone. The tribe member selects a computer part. They must connect the computer part correctly to the tower. When they are finished, the next tribe member takes his or her turn.

TechnoSurvivor includes an introduction to computers that has students complete fun challenges, such as the Computer Rescue Challenge.

The tribe that assembles the computer the fastest is the winner. However, any tribe that does not show "care" for the computer parts will be disqualified.

Earn the Title of "TechnoSurvivor"
The tribe that has won the most rewards earns the title of “TechnoSurvivor”. All tribes celebrate the victory as they have successfully endured the challenges on TechnoIsland. Suggestions are provided for awards.
